CHAPTER 21

The Incident Room and the Missing People

Inspector Rutherford had managed to appease the SPI and assure everyone that the demonic poltergeist in Liverpool had been secured. She had then put her foot down and insisted that she be given permission to concentrate on Whitby; after all, two of their best investigators had gone missing! To her relief, she had been allowed to do so.

She was more convinced than ever that the powerful and despicable ghost of Vlad the Impaler had somehow been set free. How that had occurred, she and her investigators didn’t know; they were still working on that.

Now she stood in Whitby town hall – usually it was open to the public for fetes and meetings but it was now being used as a police incident room. She looked intently at the whiteboard facing her. On it were photographs of all the people who had been taken. Beside them in bold black writing was all their information. Who they were, where they lived and the last time they were seen. Was there any sort of link?

Jackie Evans, a primary school teacher. She looked so happy in her picture, obviously taken on a family holiday.

Mark Appleby, a fisherman. He was only a young man. In his snapshot he was holding a rather large fish. Looking proud as anything at his catch.

Mary Speel, a yoga teacher. Another young woman who had disappeared after a class one night. She was pretty and according to her family ‘wouldn’t hurt a fly’.

Then there was of course Lizzie Carter, the first recorded person to go missing. She was an archaeologist from London and last seen on a dig near the abbey. The inspector had a funny inkling that Lizzie had some kind of link to the case – what that was she hoped would be made clear to her soon.

Eric Colchester smiled down at her. His picture had been taken on a sunny day, his dog Bella sat close, Eric’s arm draped casually around her. He was a well-loved character, and no one had a bad word to say against him.

Bernie Smith was pictured next to his wife. A cute old couple by all accounts and, again, loved by the community.

Ethan and Charlie, identical teens, laughed down at the inspector from the board. She bowed her head in deep concentration.

And most tragic and unsettling was a missing toddler, Amy, taken from her cot while sleeping. What her parents were going through, the inspector couldn’t even imagine.

Just before she and the SPI had arrived, a young married couple had been taken in the night. The fog had rolled in and from her police officers’ accounts most of them had seen nothing. One officer however did see a large dog running away after lots of screaming had been heard.

So far, it seemed that Vlad’s chosen victims weren’t connected in any way; it looked as if they were just random attacks. In his life, Vlad had chosen to drink blood and leave his victims’ bodies for others to find, but this was different.
